Welcome to Citizen Voices

Soon, on this blog, you will get to meet six San Diegans who will do something that I do not have the courage to do.

Blog. About. Politics.

Yes, that very polarizing topic that has ruined Thanksgiving dinners and broken up loving couples. It’s easy to have an opinion on politics. But it’s not easy to state your beliefs in public and defend them.

Yet we received over 90 applicants for Citizen Voices. We were looking for six very different people who can blog about political issues – local and federal – for the next year.

We found them. Six brave San Diegans. They come from different backgrounds, lifestyles, upbringings and political beliefs. They are also your average citizens. They include a former teacher, a law student and a stay-at-home husband.

Citizen Voices
Alma Sove, Candace Suerstedt, Trina Boice, Chris McConnell. Back row: Charles Hartley, Steven Garrett

They live here and there in San Diego from Chula Vista to Carlsbad. They are gay, straight, Latina, Jewish, Mormon and, uh, a surfer.

Over the next 11 months, they will embark on a journey that will end around the time they cast their vote for our country’s next president. Along the way, they will hash over the upcoming mayoral and city attorney elections and expound on city propositions.

Some of our bloggers have set minds and some are undecided.

We invite you to join them (and us, here at KPBS) on their decision-making journey – not just on the local front but on what could possibly be the most emotional and historically significant presidential election in decades.

As their editor, I also ask you to join us in this social experiment of sorts. Can very different people (that includes you, dear reader) have a civilized discussion about politics? Can we learn from each other’s different viewpoints?

The conversation begins today. Welcome to Citizen Voices.

Yo.. surfer… let’s see a blog on how Arnold the Governator wants to pave over San Onofre!… If you’d rather have a beach and park than another multi-lane highway then show up at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Feb 6th.. 9am.. to tell the Callifornia Coastal Commision what you think.

It is very exciting to see Citizen Voices up and running in this groundbreaking election and I look forward to reading the different perspectives offered up by my fellow San Diegans. I do have to say, however, I’m disappointed that I don’t see even one black face among your six voices. I think this is an unfortunate exclusion. Surely, out of the 90-plus applicants---myself included---there must have been some talent from the African-American community.

Uhhh,Hellloowho,It isn’t like ANYBODY has noticed that as our financial system is going to hell in a handbaskett,Haliburton has had NO layoffs?
Are we to ignore these stories(believeable,as well)that there were MANY
warnings to the cowboy about the Middle easts hatred of oour ways?
Ok,we have established a psuedo-American style government over there,
they have yet to form a REAL government, military command, economic system...........
ANd-Dubbie expects the rest of the world to emulate OUR ways?HEll-look at how much we are in debt now!
And wasn’t it “the fornicator” that brought down OUR debt to almost nilll?
The way Dubbie is screwing America-almost makes Bubba’s error
look patriotic.(At least he didn’t screw all of his country).

I am watching KPBS and OBAMA’s state and it is in shambles, like what Mit Romney did to Ma and what he failed to do when one citizen(me) came to his door step for help. All I got was the door slammed and told I don’t care?? ANd they want to be PRESIDENT?????I have been trying to get this corrected and have had
every door slammed. Every Goverment official kick me
out, advising this is a voting year and they will not
help, or care too????
I have tried to hire 11 attorney’s and none want to
ruin their career, but gladly took my money. I am
broke and homeless for the last 2 years with a
MORTGAGE???
Please if you can post a link on your web page, talk
about this on your show, if you have an emailing, let
everyone know so they can have their friends and
family also help.
Thank You James Almeida

This panel of ‘bloggers’ is blindingly white.

In a community that is a least 50% ‘Latino’ (i.e. Mexican, legal or not) and has a significant number of other minorities, African-Americans, Philippines, and others. Why is this group so homogeneous?
