The Phantom Camera at Comic-Con

The Phantom sounds like the name for a superhero or villain so I guess it's thoroughly appropriate that two panels at this year's Comic-Con would sing the praises of the Phantom HD camera. Both John Moore, director of the film version of the video game Max Payne, and Frank Miller, who's adapting Will Eisner's The Spirit to the screen, were singing the praises of this new digital technology.

At the 20th Century Fox panel, Moore described the Phantom camera's ability to record directly onto hard drives and at a rate of 1000 frames per second. I had a little trouble wrapping my brain around the 1000 digital frames per second concept since there are no physical frames running through the camera like in film, so I'm not sure exactly what this means but it sounds impressive and it did look pretty darn cool. Moore used the camera because he's "no John Woo" and wanted to tap into anything that would enhance the action because "once you take the controller our of the [video game] player's hands, you better deliver." Then at the Lionsgate/Oddlot panel, Miller showed The Spirit footage he shot with the Phantom camera for a scene in which Eva Mendes was supposed to be underwater. So check these films out when they are released and see if the Phantom camera serves up super technology.
