I’ve been testing and using the Phantom for over a year now and have had the most remarkable results.  I’m a huge fan!  It isn’t like anything else...it needs to be examined…

Harold and Kumar Go to Comic-Con

View Beth Accomando's bio

Harold and Kumar had a presence at this year's Comic-Con. You could get your photo taken with a unicorn at their booth; buy the DVD or Blu Ray release of Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo before it came out in stores; snap a pic in a GB style prison cell complete with dirty toilet; get an orange jumpsuit; or ask questions of stars Kal Penn and John Cho at their panel. The suprise success of the first indie film, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, has paved the way for an unlikely pot comedy franchise. At the Comic-Con panel, director Jon Hurwitz talked about how the film's success allowed them to pack this new DVD/Blu Ray release with extras to please the loyal fan base. Here are a few highlights, plus you can find out if Penn and Cho are anything like their on-screen characters.

Thanks to Comic-Con for access to panel footage for our news coverage.

Spaced Out at Comic-Con

View Tony Weidinger's bio

My mom got shut out of the Spaced DVD release panel (sorry, mom) but I got in because my uncle had a bathroom pass from leaving the room and was able to sneak me back in. I love the show Spaced and watch it all the time on an import DVD my mom got. Now Spaced is coming out in the US, which is cool. The TV show is by the same guys who made one of my favorite movies, Shaun of the Dead. The panel had actor Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright. The panel was fun but I wish Nick Frost, who was the actor playing Simon Pegg's best friend could have been there too. It was funny when Edgar Wright looked at the back of the sign with his name and said there was a reminder printed on the back saying that there were kids under 18 and to please not use bad words. He said, "what the f#*k is that all about?"  The best part of the panel was when someone came up to ask a question and asked if the panelists wanted to play a game. Simon said yes and the guy  drew his finger-gun in slow motion and started to shoot. Simon played along and it was funny because that's a gag from one of the episodes (see clip above).

Later that night my mom and I waited an hour in line to see the fan favorite episodes (which were some of my favorite episodes). It was a lot of fun to see these episodes with so many diehard fans -- some were even dressed up as Shaun.

Harold and Kumar

Teen blogger Tony Weidinger gets sent to Guantanamo. (Beth Accomando)

Dude! You gotta check this out. You can pick up Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo on DVD and BluRay almost a week early at the Con. What makes it even more fun is you can take a picture of yourself in a prison cell that's as gross as the one in the film. And I was told that you can also have a chance to sit on the unicorn, have your picture taken and turned into a button that you can wear at the convention! Now is that awesome or what?

Kal Penn, John Cho, and Neil Patrick Harris are all scheduled to attend the DVD relase panel for Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo, Sunday, noon, Ballroom 20.

The Romantic Allure of the VHS Tape

El Topo

You might have tracked down a VHS copy of Jodorowsky's hard to find film at Comic-Con. (Producciones Panicas)

Back in the '90s one of my favorite things to do at the San Diego Comic-Con was to get my hands on plenty of fantastic genre movies. Right before the rise of DVD and after the death of Laser Discs, the Con was that unique place to get your rare, obscure movie fix. I remember getting El Topo and The Holy Mountain VHS tapes at $25 apiece, a bargain considering the hard-to-find collector's items these legendary Alejandro Jodorowsky finds were. That's when Comic-Con was about even more than comics or about huge studios presentations. Independent distributors were part of the act too with crazy and fun oddities such as The Star Wars Holiday Special or Roger Corman's lost classic The Fantastic 4: The Movie. You can't go wrong with titles like that!
