(Updated Aug. 14, 2007) China has been stung once again by yet another recall. Toy-making giant Mattel Inc. issued recalls Tuesday for millions of Chinese-made toys that contain magnets that can be swallowed by children or could have lead paint. Last week, about 1.5 million Chinese-made Fisher-Price toys were recalled by the United States for their high level of lead paint. These are just the latest in the slew of cases involving dangerous products imported from China, including contaminated toothpaste, poisoned pet food and faulty tires.

The Catholic Diocese of San Diego announced Tuesday (Feb. 27) it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. They made the move hours before it was scheduled to go to trial in the first of more than 140 lawsuits alleging sex abuse by priests. In a letter posted on the diocese's Web site, Bishop Robert H. Brom said the diocese made its decision because any damage awards in the earlier trials "could deplete diocesan and insurance resources" and leave nothing for other victims. Plaintiffs' attorneys expressed outrage at the filing and accused the church of using bankruptcy as a way to keep potentially embarrassing information under wraps.

Bishop Brom says, "Our participation in this process will demonstrate that this is not a 'cop out,' but a sincere effort to face up to our responsibility." What do you think?

Nov. 29 Update: San Diego City Council has approved a ban on large "big-box" retail stores that are larger than 90,000 square feet and include 10% non-taxable goods like groceries. This would primarily affect Wal-Mart Supercenters which can be up to 250,000 square feet. What do you think?
